Review Q&A toyota innova evolution

What are some products that were discontinued because they were too good?

Long before there was a “Make in India” campaign, in a time when when a struggling India had regained freedom after nearly two centuries of colonialism, The Hindustan Ambassador was India’s icon for domestic production. From 1958–2014, the Ambassador would be produced with different variants. It would become not only India’s first successful domestically produced car, but also it’s first diesel car as well. In the late 1970s an Ambassador was the car the political elite traveled in, a taxi, and a status symbol all at the same time. The incredibly comfortable ride and roomy interior made up for it’s lack of sophisticated engineering. It was a car which every mechanic in India knew how to repair, and make parts for. A diesel Ambassador could run on the Indian roads of that age for upto one million kilometres, and even longer with overhauls. When, in 2014 it was discontinued there was feeling of sadness, an era had ended and the car which had so well served the early years of India’s independence was no longer a volume seller. In India today, so many foreign cars have come and gone, the Toyota Innova is an excellent people mover, and it sits high on the road and gives excellent gas mileage. There are Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars and Land Rovers as well for those who can afford to make a statement. Yet, none of these cars, vans or trucks will ever have the same meaning as the Hindustan Ambassador did. Never will one car be the dream of so many people from all levels of Indian Society. The Ambassador was a very safe car considering it’s roots were in the 1950s. The car was the evolution of the Morris Minor/Morris Oxford, and much of the factory had been purchased in the time of Prime Minister Nehru, to give India it’s own indigenous car. Over time, Hindustan Motors kept evolving the design ever so slightly. The lack of change was possible because of India’s closed economic model. There was no competition that really was direct other than a few cars which started production in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were different cars, and really could not compete with the Ambassador’s ride and heavy body. The simplicity of it’s mechanics ensured that Taxi businesses all over India wanted to keep Ambassador’s as they were inexpensive to maintain. Many fortunes were made because of this car. Nearly everyone of a certain age in India has an Ambassador story. One I know of is that Prime Minister Nehru, would travel through out India in the Ambassador once it began to replace earlier variants of Automobiles, however he would not receive foreign dignitaries in it. It would be Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who would defy Prime Minister Nehru’s example and not use P.M. Nehru’s personal Cadillac which had been left behind, and receive a foreign dignitary in a Hindustan Ambassador for the first time. He would himself take a loan to purchase his family a vehicle, it is hard to imagine today just how honest Prime Minister Shastri was. His children did not go to school in a car until he obtained a Rs. 5000 loan from Punjab National Bank, to purchase his own vehicle. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s car. Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi Museum, white Hindustan Ambassador in front. When India’s economy was opened after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Hindustan Ambassador was viewed as a car which would soon be gone. A flood of foreign cars became available in India, and by the early 2000s foreign car companies were manufacturing large volumes of cars both for the Indian Market and export. Government Contracts and the Taxi businesses kept the Ambassador in production. Really, what ended the Ambassador were increasing pollution standards, and the lack of investment in making a worthy successor. The sale of the Ambassador name to Peugeot in 2014 for 80 million Rupees, really was a short sighted move in many ways. The Ambassador could have been made into a Brand of multiple models. But, this would have taken modernization, the concept of a sturdy rear wheel drive car for India has still not lost it’s appeal. Imported luxury cars pursue this logic and do quite well. The Ambassador was a icon, when I see them on the road in India, I think that my father left India in 1957, and for the rest of his life whenever he visited India this was the car he saw. For so many, this was the only car they ever owned and drove. The Ambassador may one day return in another form, it simply was too successful and embodied so many qualities that it transcended simply being a mode of transportation. It’s place in history remains to be established, as the years continue to roll along, the memory of the Legendary Hindustan Ambassador will only continue to grow.

Why do automobile manufacturers boast about their cars/bikes having Chrome on them? Is it that special?

Gone are the days, when the automobiles used to be built robust, all metal body, metal bumpers, etc. Nowadays, the styling is a major concern for the manufacturer as well as the buyers. The fact cannot be ignored that a beautiful thing strikes first regardless of pros and cons. The latest trend is of chrome finishing and manufactures are taking it very seriously. Lets take an example. Innova, the most successful MPV and pillar for success of Toyota brand and its evolution in terms of exterior styling(chrome). This is the oldest INNOVA 2005, with minimal chrome input on bonnet and that to a small strip. The former and the latest generation Innova can be seen with heavy chrome inputs. Basically chrome is a fancy thing thing that lures the people. Manufacturers add it wherever possible both inside and outside. Thank you.

What are some of the good cars preferred by a common Indian?

There are Lots of good Cars which are Preferred, Desired and recommended by common Indians..some are BMW M3-X6–720d, Audi Q5-Q7, Audi A4-A6-A8, Audi R8, Jaguar XJ, Porsche panamera, Lexus LS, Mercedes AMG, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata, VW Passat, VW Jetta, Hyundai Elantra, Range Rover, Jaguar F-Pace, Volvo XC60, Nissan GTR, Ford Mustang, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Honda Accord, Honda Civic type R, Innova, Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Skoda Octavia RS.. but thing is only few people buy these..:P

How Hyundai is able to sell Creta with much high price in same numbers as Brezza which is lower compared to it?

In my view there are two reasons: Product Placement Premium Quality Product Placement: Earlier, for a 10 lakh plus budget only choice were big bulky ladder frame SUVs like the Safari and Scorpio, which were comfortable to be driven around but much much harder for owners to drive themselves on a daily basis within the city. The compact SUVs were a perfect choice then for the new breed of upper class who wanted a city centric easy to drive car which also gave that big car feel with mild off road capability. Ford Ecosport started and ruled this segment until the arrival of Brezza and the Nexon. But for customers wanting more refined and spacious car above compact SUV segment there was still no choice. Hyundai recognized this gap between C-SUV and big 7 seater SUVs and introduced the Creta. Creta has more space than a compact SUV but is not as big as like a Scorpio. Some may argue that the Duster also qualified for this and so it did. It received huge response with good monthly sales. But the design was too boxy and utilitarian and the interiors were too dated with no premium feel. Premium Quality: The Indian automobile market has gone through an evolution specially with advent of a large number of international automakers and increase in expendable household income. The middle class also evolved to a Upper middle class segment with higher incomes and aspirations. People now have a lot more choice and they are not hesitant to switch to a higher segment and pay even higher than competition for a worthy product. An apt example can be seen with the a higher segment Swift Dzire being the top seller in whole India outselling a lower segment Alto. Similarly when it comes to higher price, Toyota Innova and the Fortuner outsell their lesser priced competitors by huge margins because the cars have got established as highly reliable and trustworthy products. Hyundai Creta also much like the Fortuner has established itself as a class leading product so much so that many customers buy one even without a test drive. People are ready to pay extra for a Creta which is bigger , more premium and more refined than a Brezza. Unlike the boxy designs of the Duster and Brezza, Creta comes with a modern edgy design that looks up to date in a metro city with much better quality interiors and class leading cabin insulation. The diesel Creta specially is very silent and provides for a very good daily driver. With families all over going more nuclear, the 5 seater SUV segment picked up at great pace and the Creta gained on this trend by providing a reliable and premium option.

How much horse power does a 2000 cc engine have?

My father’s old 1989 Honda Accord EX has a 2.000 cc engine that generates about 103 to 110 hp at 5.000 or more rpm. My high school friend used to drive an old 2002 Toyota Kijang Krista with 2.000 cc engine that generates no more than 90 hp at the end of 4.000 or bottom 5.000 rpm. My father’s current 2010 Toyota Innova has a 2.000 cc engine that generates about 137 hp at low 5.000 rpm-ish. My friend’s 2009 Honda CR-V and other friend’s 2012 Mazda CX-5, both have 2.000 cc engine that generate around 150 to 155 hp. My brother’s 2012 Hyundai ix35 / Tucson has a 2.000 cc engine that can fire up 166 hp somewhere at mid 6.000 rpm. My friend’s 2013 Ford Focus has a 2.000 cc engine that churns out 177 hp. A Ralliart-tuned Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X has a 2.000 cc turbocharged engine that can generate up to 400 hp. All of those cars have in-line 4 cylinder configuration. The latest Toyota 86 / Subaru BR-Z from 2013 has a boxer (horizontally opposing) flat 4 engine from Subaru, with 2.000 cc capacity that generates 197 hp. You see, it is rather difficult to answer this question.

Which Indian car manufacturer has the edge in electric vehicle segment with respect to products and launches?

Thanks for asking. It actually depends on how you view the electric cars. In the rich Nordic countries a tesla model s which costs equivalent to a top variant of Mercedes e class or a BMW 5 series, an electric car is just another car which is less polluting. In the USA it is a semi-luxury car which can for the time being be done with any other car for transportation(because public transport sucks and car is a necessity). In the middle east who don't care about money, it is just a car which has no sound and minimal features. It is less attractive there. BUT with a big B, in our country where 80% of the population still uses public transport and car is still considered the 2nd biggest expense in life after a house, owning a car itself is a luxury. So we spend on an average 5–8 lakhs on our first car. Honestly speaking there is no electric vehicle in this range. Mahindra e2o is a miniature and mahindra veritos electric is more of a fleet(taxi). Both have a range of 120kms and 140kms respectively. Both are a unattractive propositions. So the next available electric car available for sale is the Hyundai Kona which costs around 23–25 lakhs. It is already a expensive car for even the upper middle class who are in their 2nd or 3rd vehicle. At that price you can own a proper SUV which is semi luxury. Many options like jeep compass, Toyota Innova, tata harrier, honda civic, kia selitos, Hyundai creta, honda Crv etc., etc., value for money cars can be bought. Then why buy a Hyundai i20 sized electric car. The above explanation is a preface to your question. Right now no car manufacturer has an edge. Only if TATA motors deliver on their promise(which they have always) of bringing in a 15–17lakh costing Nexonev, sub 10 lakhs tigorev. Then i think they might have an advantage. Because hyundai has already made its intensions clear that it will not concentrate more on electric cars unless and until government norms push it to, by launching the hyundai kona. So all eyes are on our own TATA motors to initiate this evolution. What i think is- consider this scenario You enter a tata car showroom to buy your first car. You have a budget of 5–8 lakhs inr. You have options like Tiago, tigor, base variant of tata Nexon. Only when the electric and internal combustion cars cost the same will you be able to go for the electric option. Also, low maintainance is a factor to consider your buying decision because what i have heard is that there are many electronic issues that might come up in electric cars. So electric cars will not be cheap to maintain either. Maybe in the near future, the maintenance cost might come down. So only the manufacturer who will innovate and initiate will have an edge. No need of launching many models. 1 in sedan, 1 in hatchback and 1 in SUV will be enough. So i think TATA motors is going the right way.

Which is a better vehicle for self-driving and long-term use, Tata Hexa or Toyota Innova?

There is no doubt in long term Reliablity and ownership happiness for Toyota Innova Crysta. Coming to Tata Hexa, Tata has evolved Drastically in last 2 years and they have improved in terms of Aftersale sales service,Interior Quality of Cars,Engine refinements,Design Evolution. Tata Hexa is basically based on Safari and Aria Platform and shares its underpinnings from Safari. So reliablity of parts and Engines are not an issue. What actually is to think of is the newer technologies which have been used in Hexa and is first time used by Tata in Indian Market. Although there have been no issue reported till now so I expect that it will withstand reliably with Indian customers. Owning a Tata Hexa will only make you concerned of any new unknown issue to be occurred which will take time by Tata officials. Rest of the things depends on you like which Vehicles design appeals you more ,or which is more luxurious to you or which is more premium according to you. Innova is bit overpriced in its segment, and will get a good resale value anytime. Tata is priced Perfect and offers value for money in its segment and Resale value is on lower side ,but if this vehicles performs fine in future then the demand in used car market will decide its resale value. in future. Personally I would suggest you to go For Tata Hexa. I haven't explained about Innova because it has already proved its better image in India. Hope this helps for you.

What are the few competent cars that failed in India due to marketing?

Over the years, there have been many different types of cars that have been introduced in the Indian market. ,While most of them were launched to go with the flow by a particular automaker, some deserve a mention for being competitive and more ahead of the time., Unfortunately, the bold attempts carried out by various automakers have been inconsistent in the market. Due to the inefficiency in marketing them well by the automakers, many outstanding products were ignored over the years. This later on proved to be influential in the massive failure of the products. ,Here are five such products which despite being great, had to be discontinued due to some poor handling of sales by their respective automakers. Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet introduced the Cruze to the Indian market in the 2009 model year. Unlike most of the models launched by the automaker during the time, the Cruze was a sure shot winner on their hands. It had a potent 2.0 litre diesel motor, which produced a massive 197 BHP of power back then. The Cruze also had a pretty decent petrol engine in its stable compared to its German counterparts. Above that, the design of the Cruze resembled that of the Camaro, which had attained good fame here coming from the Transformers series. Despite all that, the Cruze was marketed as a premium by Chevrolet despite being well priced compared to the Skoda Laura and Volkswagen Jetta. In fact, you had to pay a premium as a booking amount while purchasing the car, Which kind of frustrated its potential owners. All that was backed by the mediocre service by the dealership, which never inspired confidence. Hence, the car which was touted to revive the premium sedan segment back then turned to be a massive failure. It kind of gave us a lesson that in the business front, marketing surely matters. Thus, the Cruze despite being an enthusiast favourite went off air in 2016, just a year before Chevrolet left India for good. 2. Ford Fusion. This is my personal favourite amongst the list and its failure in India really bothers me. The Fusion was among the first attempts by the automaker to introduce a whole new segment, called the premium hatchback one. Looking at the Fusion, it was not amongst the best looking cars around. But it more than made up for it due to its practicality and large dimensions, which resulted in more space inside. Handling and driving feel were a massive plus on it, with the Fusion having a great engine to support it. Ford marketed it as a no-nonsense car, but the automaker also kept a budget cap in order to advertise it back then. This proved to be a massive dent in the India journey of the Fusion, which was a tad bit expensive at the time. But, Ford had developed a habit of making a deal of slightly expensive cars with the Endeavour, so the Fusion was also expected to fall on the same bracket. But what happened was the Fusion, despite its incredible versatility hardly managed to sell in decent numbers. In fact, even before its discontinuation in 2010, the Fusion became a rare sight in Indian roads. This was a sad end to a car that could have been the face of the premium hatchback segment back then, one which forms the highest chunk of sales amongst all segments in the Indian market today. 3. Mitsubishi Cedia. The Mitsubishi Cedia can easily go down as one of the most underrated cars ever to be sold here. Launched in 2005, the premium sedan had huge potential, after all it came from the stables of the company which made the legendary Evolution road going rally cars. The Cedia had various styling bits from the Lancer Evo 8 and later on the Evo 9. The highlight of the Cedia was that it had a very performance-oriented 2.0 litre diesel motor which was loved by journalists and enthusiasts alike. But, Hindustan Motors who partnered Mitsubishi here were really short of cash in order to market the car. Mitsubishi on the other hand had problems of their own globally, which eventually led to the company being bankrupt a few years later. This never quite helped the sales of the Cedia and despite the car being a very reliable product, never took off. Thus, the inability of resources within both automakers resulted in the Cedia massively losing out. But over the years, it has garnered a bit of a reputation as a performance sedan and also as a collectors edition car here. All of that came late as by then, the Cedia was already phased out from the market. I can mention almost every model that Mitsubishi has launched after the Lancer in this list, but out of all of them the Cedia was the most promising product. 4. Tata Aria. The Aria was launched in the 2011 model year and was a landmark car for Tata Motors in many ways. Firstly, it marked a new beginning for the homegrown automaker by being a product far different from any other Tata car ever sold. It was feature loaded and also spacious, which seemed the ideal code to crack the market. But the then flagship model of Tata Motors never found favour with the public as it was marketed as a premium. This meant that customers were not sure of paying a lot of money for a Tata car. This was itself a roadblock for a company known for making affordable and fuel efficient vehicles. Product wise, the Aria had many flaws like its bland looks, inconsistent engine and bad riding feel. But all that could have been forgotten by the automaker if the MPV was marketed to a large extent. Back then, the Aria was a massive threat to the Toyota Innova which was without doubt an established brand here. But, the Aria found a very few takers, with most of them being in the fleet and taxi segment. In the end, Tata Motors had to discontinue the car in favour of the Hexa in 2016. Thus, this was a sad end to a car which had a lot of promise during its day and should have sold more than it did. 5. Skoda Fabia. The Fabia was without doubt the most influential Skoda launch during its time. Skoda were then specialised as a premium brand here, with no experience in the mass market segment. But in 2008, the automaker took a risk in entering it, particularly the premium hatchback segment. Skoda spent a lot of money to develop the Fabia for India and the automaker had also said that it will thoroughly focus on this segment for the coming years. The Fabia was a typical Skoda, having a decent equipment list and exciting engines, but what made it different was that it was not priced high. But one thing that we associate with Skoda is that they never market their products extensively here. That was the case with the Fabia, with Skoda banking on its premium image to lure customers into buying the car. But that did not click as the Fabia, despite getting great reviews from automotive journalists never quite clicked. What made it difficult was that it was competing with the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which was at its peak back then. The further arrival of the Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto and Honda Jazz sidelined the Fabia, which turned out to be a massive downgrade. Skoda quietly phased out the Fabia in 2012, with the car never being able to fulfill its potential in the Indian market. Thus, these were the cars that I feel deserved to have some success in the market, if not for the marketing blunder that their respective automakers made. ,There are many such cars that fall in this category and it would take a long mention to write about them., ,Nevertheless, most of the automakers that I mentioned above moved on from their failures by concentrating on other ends of the market. But the failures mentioned above may likely have haunted them during that time. ,This teaches us a very significant lesson about the Indian market, that is, even the most technologically advanced car launched will not guarantee you success in sales numbers. ,For that, the automaker must realize it is a success and should widely market it as a success. Thank you.
