My Kia was made in the States, and I bought that. But I won’t buy ones from a US company. I’ve owned 4 cars in my life. Started driving in 1993, so you can track the cars and ages in this list. As you can tell, I’m poor, and my cars are all on the cheaper side of the equation. All got basic maintenance. A 1980s Toyota Mini van. Got it used from my mom who had also bought it used because my family wanted someone to have a van as a workhorse car when she shifted to diving smaller cars. Funny looking thing from the 80s, looked like a space shuttle from a low budget sci fi show, we called it “The Life Pod.” I loved this car, it never broke down, I put 150,000 miles on it before the frame just started falling apart from the rust (Ohio likes salt in the winter.) When I got rid of it the mechanics I talked to said the engine was good for at least another 150,000 miles. A 1992 Dodge Caravan. It was newer than the Toyota was when I got it, broke down constantly, and cost a lot to maintain. It lasted the shortest time of my 4 cars. Constant repairs and finally a fatal flaw, the cooling system parts died and would cost more than the car to replace since the cooling broke in every model. A Kia Rio Hatchback. This was my first new car, $8900 bucks off the lot with 74 miles on it. I got it to 125,000 miles in 10 years, but I really should have dropped it after 9 as the car really began to wear out that last year. It never broke down though. A 2012 Kia Soul. It hasn’t broken down yet, and is at 111,000 miles. So my experience has taught me that cheaper American Cars are not reliable, and since I try to keep my car as long as reasonably possible, I stick to reliable cars. UPDATE from 2021! OK, the Soul died. Made it to 129,000 miles. In summer of 2019 the driveshaft began to rattle, and the Kia mechanic told me it would last 6 months or less before it died, and that the repairs were more than the car was worth. So I searched for a few weeks, and found my new car, a Honda fit. Yep, it’s like my wife’s car, but older, and it does a good job getting around. I treat me car nicer than hers, so it never breaks down on me. I would have bought a newer Soul, but they tried such a hard sell on me I just left and didn’t come back from their dealership. The last 2 are actual photos of my cars. The others just look a lot like them.
Two possible answers to your question and both are at least 2-3 years out. Ford can make as many EV’s as Tesla does now - about 350,000 per year. -or- Ford produces as many EV’s as Tesla does in any given year. As other posters have mentioned the largest obstacle to Ford would be battery supply. As shown by the Mercedes debacle - ,Mercedes-Benz EV targets cut because there aren't enough batteries - Roadshow, even getting a supply for 25,000 batteries from one of the largest battery suppliers in the world can be challenging. Other automakers have taken the hint and started to build their own Gigafactories to make their own batteries. GM is building an EV battery factory with LG Chem in Lordstown, Ohio Northvolt secures $1 billion from VW, others for gigafactory; VW joint gigafactory also planned - Electrek These factories aren’t expected to be able to produce until 2021 for VW and 2023 for GM. So even if Ford breaks ground this year, it will probably be 2–3 years before Ford can secure enough battery production to meet 300,000 vehicles per year. Secondarily, Ford would need to build or retool a factory for full EV production, a one or two year project. The second main problem that Ford has is lack of interest. Tesla sold over 300,000 of the Model 3 in 2019 alone. Going forward, those sales should increase as Gigafactory 3 comes online in China and eventually Gigafactory 4 in Germany. Ford will have a hard time matching those sales with just a single model and the recently revealed Mach E, while getting pre-orders (50,000), ,Forget Tesla Pre-Orders, the Ford Mach-E Has Sold Out - Market Realist, certainly does not have the excitement of the Model 3 (325,000) ,Tesla has received 325,000 preorders for the Model 3 ,or Cybertruck (250,000). This means Ford will need to create several new models to generate demand. Their current schedule is to have additional models released by 2023 and 40 by 2025. ,Can Ford Power Up With Its Plans for New EVs? | The Motley Fool, So even on this schedule Ford will be 2–3 years out with sufficient variety of models to compete, with the electric F-150 possibly being a big production contender. ,Ford F-150 Electric Pickup Truck: Everything We Know - Launch, Specs Ford has a final problem. Although your question asks about number PRODUCED, in Ford’s case, this doesn’t equate with number sold. Tesla effectively manufacturers on demand, an EV isn’t built until there is an order. Ford being a traditional manufacturer can produce many more vehicles than it can sell to consumers and simply let dealers absorb the excess. There may be fightback from dealers to having hard to sell vehicles pressed on them and therefore may not be enthused to sell the EV’s. This may lead to many EV’s sitting on lots, produced, but not sold. ,Car dealerships put in a lot of work to not sell you an electric car In summary, it will be at least 2–3 years for Ford to match what Tesla does today. With Tesla’s rapidly ramping production of EV’s for Ford to exceed what Tesla sells in the same year is probably longer than that, with the electric Ford F-150 being the dark horse model which could completely change the equation.
