On most cars sold in the U.S. since the mid 90s, a fuel level sensor problem can cause the following; Inaccurate fuel gauge. Stored PCM trouble code, P0461 is one example Evaporative Emissions diagnostics will be disabled. The last one is important to someone who cannot get the EVAP monitor to run. Fuel level is an input used by the PCM to know when to run the EVAP tests. The fuel level sensor code may not turn on the Check Engine light.
In the fuel tank. They usually mount from top of tank. On fuel injected vehicles this is part of the electric fuel pump mounted from top of fuel tank. Some vehicles have access to this through floor above tank so tank removal may not be necessary. Somtimes access is under back seat.
ultrasonic fuel level sensor works by not being in contact with the fuel so you have to look on upper side of tank . here the wires will show you the position of fuel level sensor .
There will be a float actuator, which works on a potentiometer. Float will be a hollow plastic bottle like, buoyancy operated sealed unit, it will be freely floating in fuel tank. As the fuel level increases or decreases its level will also change. A light linkage is attatched to it which in turn operates a potentiometer. The change in resisistance will indicate fuel level in the tank.
P0462 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Input It means the fuel level sensor is no longer taking correct readings. I would suggest you check the fuel level sensor. Here is a helpful video shows you how to do that:
Fuel level sensor is there to let you know when to fill up. Bad sensor will not affect running. Only danger is that you may run out, and get stranded.
If the float somehow breaks or becomes separated from the arm it may cause the fuel gauge to malfunction and become stuck on empty. A faulty resistor can also cause the gauge to read empty.
No, the fuel level sensor simply measures how much fuel is in the tank, it has nothing to do with how much fuel the engine is going to use. The largest issue you will likely run into is running out of gas because you don’t actually know how much fuel is in your vehicle.
Okay Alex… there is an answer below… it is good, but if it doesn’t work for you get some tape you can write on. Put it on the gas gauge, for sure so you can see the pointer through its complete swing. Get a gallon or more container you can use to carry gas and works to pour its contents into the gas tank. If allowed to refill yourself, get a friend or if you have to use an attendant go to get gas late at night. Drive near a gas station until you run out of gas. Pour a gallon of gas from your gas can into the tank. Mark the tape 1 where the pointer is. Drive to the gas station. Have your assistant using the gauge on the gas pump to pump 1 gallon of gas into your tank. Then mark 2 on the tape. Do that for each gallon until the tank is full. Every time you get gas note the gauge gallons of gas in the tank from the tape before pumping. Determine how many gallons were pumped via the gauge on the pump and compare it to gallons increase on the gauge in the car. They should match. I’ve done this many times racing street cars on a sports car track. The gas in the car after the race did nothing but slow the car. So it is important know how much fuel is in the tank before refueling the car for track time… practice or the race itself. Don’t want any extra, but too little is an embarrassment. A little tape and a friend cares for the trick. jimD
